Message from the Principal

At Mandela High, a college prep school, we foster positive interracial and intergroup relationships and take advantage of the varied cultures and perspectives in Oakland. Our school theme of social responsibility is woven throughout the curriculum. Annual class field trips provide an extra opportunity for students to learn to appreciate one another through out of classroom experiences.

Our staff works collaboratively to ensure student aca-demic improvement in their core studies. We are committed to a rigorous environment where students become articulate and skilled critical thinkers. We believe all students, given adequate time, effort, discipline and support, will be able to read, write, and speak in both English and the language of mathematics at a level that will allow them to enter college or fulfill other goals fully prepared for the academic work required.

The Mandela Staff ensures that our students are provided a support system by way of our bi-weekly advisory course. We familiarize them with their academic data utilizing personalized learning plans, school expectations, attendance and progress reports. Grade level advisory teachers meet weekly with the school counselor to provide the needed care to support our students.

Mandela has met annual State goals, and received a six year WASC accreditation, the highest possible rating. We offer AP courses in English, math, science and social studies. We also have intervention programs in Math and English for the California High School Exit Exam. All students take the PSAT exam free of charge and have the opportunity to take the SAT and ACT exams.
